Menu Ideas For RU-Washington State

Fortunately, as a pseudo-foodie and resident of the Northeast, I do not live in Pullman, WA, where the best restaurant rated on TripAdvisor is an ice cream shop and the pickings otherwise appear slim.

Pullman, WA...near Napoleon
Dynamite's hometown
If you want to load up on ice cream sundaes on Saturday, we can do that, but the situation (digestively) could turn ugly...FAST!

Recall that earlier this year I stumbled upon a review about the gyros at a place called "Black Cypress," where it appears the menu changes regularly (and does not have gyros on it now), so we can go that route (chicken and lamb/beef) and build around a Greek/Mediterranean food theme or entirely off the board upon your suggestion.

Another concept that came up in discussion last Saturday was salmon, which we could just as well do on the grill, tapping into the broader Washington state flavor.

Apples are the state fruit, so of course if people want to drum up a few apple-based desserts that seems to make some sense.

Let's get a discussion going and a resolution/consensus by Thursday night.

I have no problem procuring the meats and fish, if that's helpful.

  1. I'll bring homemade fried apples -- don't know if that qualifies as side dish or dessert. Plus beer, of course.

  2. I LOVE the gyro/Greek food idea! Not sure we have ever done that before (at least not while I have been part of the group)? Trying to think up a side dish that would accompany them, I can always do the loaded tots again or Diane makes a nice Cous Cous salad that we can do Greek-style.

  3. I'll handle the meats, pitas and tzatki and hot sauces for gyros. Can I get a big Greek salad or something along those lines from elsewhere in the group who hasn't signed up yet?

  4. Bill, thanks as always for handling the "big ticket items", please let us know how much we can all chip in towards your out of pocket expense.

  5. OK, Chris. We're set on the main cuisines. I found gyro strips (4 lb. box) and have lots of chicken breast, plus the pitas, sauces, lettuce, tomato and onion. We appear to be set otherwise w/food (w/your cous cous, Coulter's salad and Pete's apples). We could use beer, soft drinks and snacks whomever has yet to chime in.

  6. I'll have water, soda, doritos, chips, & popcorn.

  7. I will try and bring some Baklava or some other Greek sweet. I don't have any Ouzo, but maybe I'll bring some beer. Don't know if I have anything Washington specific.

  9. Yes, noon. We need to beat the thunderstorms.

  10. No need to go out of the way for Ouzo, Tom; great job supporting the theme, but first and last time I had it in 9th grade at classmate Ken Belitsis' house was enough to know I did NOT like it (just hate black licorice). Beer/Baklava works. Yes, noon.
